The three most recent Form 990s are listed by themselves; older years drop off. Every document is a labelled sample.

The 990, in plain words

Part I is the one-page summary: $884,000 came in, $812,000 went out.

Part IX splits every dollar spent: $634,000 on the land and the trails, $104,000 on running the office, $74,000 on raising the money.

Part III is the work in words: seven preserves open to the public, 38 easements held, every one monitored.

Schedule D, Part II is where a land trust reports its easements to the IRS: how many, how many acres, and how many it monitored in the year. Those are the only easement facts we publish, and they are the ones in the box beside the fund.

The review is an independent accountant’s look at the year’s statements, a step short of a full audit. The determination letter is what makes gifts deductible.
